Col. John A. Brunderman, Class of ’77, USAF Retired Military Leader

John Brunderman was an outstanding student and athlete while attending both Sahuaro High School and the United State Air Force Academy. John graduated third in his class at Sahuaro. Upon graduation from high school, John was awarded a full scholarship to the United State Air Force Academy where he majored in Astronautical Engineering. In 1981 he graduated 86 out of 843 commissioned officers.

John’s initial career years were spent as a pilot and instructor. He developed a revolutionary software program for aircrew scheduling, which earned him an Air Force Productivity Enhancement of the Year award in 1989. As John’s career developed, he held many positions from Operations Officer to Squadron Commander, Assistant Deputy Director of Operations to Division Chief of the Global Mobility portfolio on the Air Staff.

Of John’s decorated career, his most courageous service was to our nation and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld on the morning of September 11, 2001. He was stationed at the Pentagon and was instrumental in coordinating military communications during the crisis. He directly supported the Secretary of Defense and kept senior military officials apprised of the evolving situation. He authored the NMCC’s after action report, which was the genesis for numerous improvements in both systems and procedures across the Department of Defense. During the GLOBAL WAR ON TERROR and Operations ENDURING FREEDOM (Afghanistan) and IRAQI FREEDOM (Iraq), John served as a watch officer in the Pentagon, coordinating crisis response activities on the Joint Staff and preparing briefings for the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

In addition to a very successful and oft-awarded military career, John started his own business in 1991. The BrunderBach is a software business, which develops software for commercial clients. All software programs are developed and marketed by John himself. In 2011 the BrunderBach will have served clients for 20 years.

While John is focused on career and service to his country, he is far more dedicated to his faith and family. John is very active within his church community and is currently serving as the head usher of Grace Bible Church in Lorton, VA. He hosts a small group at his home for a Bible study. Both of John’s sons have followed in their Dad’s footsteps. Eric is in the U.S. Marine Corps and Adam is a 2010 graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy.
